In a significant development ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Tackle Youth Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the younger generation. This promise follows the violent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which resulted in significant casualties.
"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.
The September uprising was triggered by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding accusations of systemic graft in politics.
Terms of the Fresh Political Partnership
According to the formal pact, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the country's established political class. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Wider Political Consultations Underway
In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with a number of major political leaders. These talks included former prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the protests.
Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a collective responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and fear-free environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
