The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
