The Australian skipper has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.
The Australian chair of selectors Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming historic rivalry.
There were concerns that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.
Earlier indications from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest set to start on November 21 in Perth.
The selector shared that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the likelihood of being involved.
"We know that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations around that, not only his injury, but further aspects," he commented.
"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he's going to play a significant role. Ideally starting in Perth. If not, then we'll pick it up."
Past Concerns
He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand recently after medical tests showed a lower back issue.
There is a track record of spinal problems, with setbacks in multiple past seasons causing him to miss several home seasons in four years.
He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the series.
The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.
Alternative Arrangements
In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.
The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against India as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.
Bailey described it as a "slight concern and stated that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."
"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the initial game as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.
"He was only going to play the first two ODIs anyway. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for another day, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
